Bhairabi Aryal: A Pioneer of Organic Farming in Nepal

Bhairabi Aryal | Farming since childhood; managing her own farm since marriage; practicing fully organic farming for several years after participating in VIN’s organic farming awareness program

Bhairabi Aryal is a trailblazer in organic farming and a powerful example of resilience, determination, and sustainable agriculture in Nepal. At 40 years old, she not only manages her household and raises three children—two daughters and a son—but has also successfully transformed her farm into a fully organic enterprise. Her journey reflects both courage and commitment in a sector where change is often challenging.

Early Life and Farming Background

Farming has always been a part of Bhairabi’s life. She grew up in a farming household and, after getting married later in life, began her own farming journey in Kishandol Tinpiple. Initially, she started with goat farming, which later expanded into vegetable cultivation. This combination laid the foundation for what would eventually become her organic farming practice.

Turning Point: Embracing Organic Farming

A major turning point in Bhairabi’s farming journey came when she connected with Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN). Through VIN, she was invited to participate in an awareness program focused on organic farming and sustainable agriculture. Without hesitation, she joined—and the experience proved transformative.

The program inspired her to fully commit to producing clean, healthy, and chemical-free food. With guidance from the initiative, Bhairabi began producing her own organic fertilizer using goat dung and compost. Instead of chemical pesticides, she adopted insect-based pest control methods. Her determination to go organic grew so strong that she eventually eliminated all chemical inputs from her farm.

Today, Bhairabi proudly states that her farm is 100% organic, making her one of the leading examples of organic farming in Nepal. Choosing to go completely organic—especially without prior experience—required immense courage and perseverance, and her success has set a powerful example for other farmers across the country.

Crops and Daily Farm Life

Bhairabi currently grows a variety of green vegetables, including:

  • Cauliflower
  • Gourd
  • Beans
  • Cucumber
  • Other seasonal vegetables

Reaching this stage was not easy, and maintaining her farm remains a constant challenge. Market prices fluctuate from year to year, and profits are not always stable. These uncertainties make farming—and income security—difficult. To sustain her farm operations, Bhairabi has taken a loan from a cooperative, reflecting the financial risks many smallholder farmers face.

Family Support and Community Strength

Bhairabi works on her farm every day, supported wholeheartedly by her family. Despite their studies and other responsibilities, her children and family members contribute whenever possible. Their cooperation and mutual dependence demonstrate the strength of family-based farming and collective effort.

Future Aspirations and Vision

While Bhairabi is proud of what she has achieved, she remains focused on growth. Her goal is not only to be recognized as a successful organic farmer but also as a strong agro-entrepreneur. Currently, her produce is purchased by regular, loyal buyers, but she hopes to expand her reach to wholesalers and larger markets.

Expansion, however, comes with challenges—finding new buyers and scaling production is not easy. Still, Bhairabi remains optimistic. She firmly believes that as awareness grows, more people will recognize that organic food is better—for personal health and for the health of the planet.

A Model for the Future

Meeting Bhairabi Aryal is truly inspiring. Her journey as a pioneer of organic farming in Nepal shows what is possible when determination meets opportunity. With time, her example will hopefully encourage many more farmers to follow the organic path she has boldly paved.
