Proving Agriculture’s Potential for Young Nepal
While many young Nepalis look abroad for opportunities, Birendra Khadka from Ghorahi in Dang district decided to build his future at home through innovative farming. He leased 16 katthas of land at Swargadwari Ashram and introduced commercial strawberry cultivation—a crop uncommon in the area’s traditional rice and maize fields.
Investing in quality seedlings, modern irrigation, fertilizers, and careful labor, Birendra applied contemporary techniques to ensure high yields of fresh, organic strawberries. The short growing cycle allows multiple harvests, and his strategic marketing targets local markets and direct consumers.
The results speak for themselves: an annual turnover of around Rs. 1.4 million, with net earnings of Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 600,000 per season after expenses. Birendra emphasizes that with the right knowledge and effort, high-value crops like strawberries can be highly profitable.
His success not only provides a sustainable income but also serves as an inspiring example for peers, showing that agriculture can be a viable business without leaving Nepal. Organizations are taking notice, offering support to further improve yields and market reach, potentially expanding strawberry farming across the country.
As Birendra says, “Agriculture is not just about traditional farming anymore. There are many opportunities in organic and high-value crops.”
